What Students Need to Do
- Students show connected addition and subtraction problems with pictures, drawings, and equations. They use patterns from one problem to solve another problem within 20.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student solves a string such as 7 + 5, 7 + 6, and 12 − 5 accurately. They use a drawing or equation to explain how a known fact helps solve another fact.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think 8 minus 3 equals 3 minus 8 because addends can switch order. They may recount every object or draw models that do not match their equations.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Solve 8 + 6, 8 + 7, and 14 − 6. Draw one model, then explain how one answer helped find another.
