Georgia 1.NR.5.1
The Standard
Use a variety of strategies to solve applicable, mathematical addition and subtraction problems with one- and two-digit whole numbers.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Use concrete models, the base ten structure, and properties of operations to add and subtract within 100.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students solve addition and subtraction problems within 100 using objects, drawings, place-value thinking, or mental strategies. They decide whether to add or subtract and explain how their strategy works.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student chooses an efficient strategy, such as making a ten, splitting tens and ones, or using an open number line. They represent the work clearly and get an accurate answer within 100.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may combine tens and ones incorrectly or forget to trade ten ones for one ten. They may choose addition whenever numbers are being joined, even when the unknown part requires subtraction. Some count every object instead of using groups of ten.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “There are 46 red cubes and 28 blue cubes. How many cubes are there? Show two strategies and explain one.”

Ways to Teach It
Have students use base-ten blocks to solve 34 + 28 and 62 − 27, trading one ten when needed.
Ask students to compare making a ten and splitting tens and ones for 48 + 25, then write which strategy feels clearer.
Partners draw two number cards, spin add or subtract, solve within 100, and earn a point by explaining their strategy.
Set up a classroom store with prices under $50, then have students find totals and calculate how much money remains.
