Expectations in This Standard
2.NR.2 is a Georgia mathematics standard. These are the expectations under it.
- 2.NR.2.1
Fluently add and subtract within 20 using a variety of mental, part-whole strategies.
- 2.NR.2.2
Find 10 more or 10 less than a given three-digit number and find 100 more or 100 less than a given three-digit number.
- 2.NR.2.3
Solve problems involving the addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers using part-whole strategies.
- 2.NR.2.4
Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students solve one-step addition and subtraction problems with numbers within 1,000. They use place value, break numbers apart, make friendly numbers, or use related addition and subtraction facts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students solve addition and subtraction problems within 1,000 accurately. They choose a useful strategy, show place-value reasoning, and explain why the answer fits the situation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may line up digits incorrectly or regroup without connecting the step to hundreds, tens, and ones. They may choose an operation from a keyword instead of the story. Some think every problem has only one valid strategy.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A school collected 638 cans and donated 275. How many remain?” Students use two strategies and check with addition.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs use base-ten blocks to solve 347 + 286, then record each trade with an equation.
Ask students to compare two methods for 602 − 278 and write which method they prefer and why.
Partners draw digit cards, build two three-digit numbers, and earn points for solving valid sums or differences and explaining their strategy.
Count books in two classroom library sections, then find the total or how many more books one section has.
