What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students represent real-life addition and subtraction situations with part-whole diagrams, equations, or place-value models. They find an unknown part or whole using numbers up to 10,000 and explain their strategy.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify the whole, known part, and missing part in a story problem. They draw a model, write a matching equation, calculate accurately, and check whether the answer makes sense.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose an operation from a keyword instead of deciding which amount is the whole. They may reverse the parts and whole or misalign place values. Regrouping across zeros can also cause errors.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “A school collected 6,240 cans. Third grade collected 2,785 cans. How many did the other grades collect?” Ask students to draw a part-whole model, write an equation, and solve.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build 3,426 and 2,157 with place-value disks, combine them on a part-whole mat, then record the matching equation.

  2. Ask, “How does knowing the whole and one part help you find the missing part?” Students explain with a labeled diagram.

  3. Play Missing Part Match by pairing story cards, part-whole diagrams, and equations using numbers up to 10,000.

  4. Use school attendance totals to find a grade-level amount, a combined total, or a missing group from a known school total.
