The Standard

Apply part-whole strategies, properties of operations and place value understanding, to solve problems involving addition and subtraction within 10,000. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Justify solutions.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students break numbers into parts or use place value and operation properties to add and subtract. They represent an unknown amount with a letter, solve for it, and explain why their answer makes sense.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose an efficient strategy, such as decomposing, compensation, or regrouping, and calculate accurately. They write an equation with a letter for the missing amount and justify the solution using place value, a model, or inverse operations.

Common Misconceptions

Students may line up digits incorrectly or regroup without tracking place value. They may treat the letter as a label, choose the wrong operation, or give an answer without showing why it works.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: “A library had 6,240 books. After some were checked out, 4,785 remained. Write an equation using a letter, solve, and justify your answer.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build 3,468 and 2,157 with place-value disks, combine them, record an equation with a letter, and explain each regrouping.

  2. Discuss: Which is easier for 6,002 minus 1,998, compensation or regrouping, and why?

  3. Play Unknown Number Match by pairing word-problem cards with equation cards and solving each match on a place-value mat.

  4. Use a school supply order and budget to find missing costs, totals, or amounts left under 10,000.
