What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide whether a situation calls for multiplication or division. They write an equation with a letter for the missing value, solve it, and explain why the answer fits.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student identifies what is known and unknown, then writes a matching equation such as 6 × n = 42. The student finds n = 7 and justifies it with equal groups, an array, or a related fact.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may multiply every pair of numbers they see or divide in the wrong order. They may confuse the number of groups with the group size or give an answer without checking the context.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “Seven bags hold 56 apples equally. Write an equation with a letter, solve it, and justify your answer with a model or related fact.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 36 counters and cups, then have them model two equal-group stories and write a letter equation for each.
Ask students to compare 8 × m = 48 and 48 ÷ 8 = m, then explain how both represent the same story.
Play Equation Match with story cards, equation cards, and answer cards using products within 100.
Have students arrange 48 juice boxes into equal classroom sets, choose a set size, and explain the resulting number of sets.
