Georgia 5.NR.2

5.NR.2 is a Georgia mathematics standard. These are the expectations under it.

• 5.NR.2.1

  Fluently multiply multi-digit (up to 3- digit by 2-digit) whole numbers to solve authentic problems.

• 5.NR.2.2

  Fluently divide multi-digit whole numbers (up to 4-digit dividends and 2-digit divisors no greater than 25) to solve practical problems.

What Students Need to Do

Students solve situations that call for multiplication or division with numbers having several digits. They use place value, estimation, and written methods to calculate. They explain their method and decide what a remainder means.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student selects the correct operation from a situation, records an efficient method, and gets an accurate answer. The student uses estimation to check the result. Any remainder is interpreted and labeled based on the situation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may misalign place values when multiplying or dividing. They may omit placeholder zeros in partial products or bring down digits incorrectly in long division. They may ignore how the situation affects a remainder.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A school has 48 boxes with 125 pencils in each box and shares them equally among 30 classrooms. Find the pencils per classroom, show both operations, and check with an estimate.

   Use place value disks to model 34 × 216, then regroup the disks and connect each move to a written partial product.
