What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use an efficient written method to divide whole numbers and estimate first to judge whether the quotient is reasonable. They solve practical problems and decide what any remainder means in the situation.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student finds quotients accurately and keeps digits aligned by place value. They check using multiplication and addition of any remainder. They explain whether the answer should be exact, rounded up, or stated with a remainder.

Common Misconceptions

Students may divide only the leading digits and lose place value, especially when a zero belongs in the quotient. They may stop before the remainder is less than the divisor. In context, they may report a remainder without deciding whether to round up, discard it, or name it.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A theater seats 1,183 students in rows of 24. How many rows are needed? Show your division and explain how the remainder affects your answer.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups 384 tiles and 16 cups; students share the tiles equally, then connect each step to a partial-quotients record.

  2. Ask students to compare two solutions for 1,344 ÷ 21 and write which method is clearer, faster, and easier to check.

  3. Run a quotient-check relay: teams estimate, solve a division card, verify by multiplication, then trade cards with another team.

  4. Plan buses for 1,175 students with 24 seats each; find how many buses are needed and explain the remainder.
