Georgia 4.NR.2.1

Math4th GradeNumerical Reasoning

The Standard

Fluently add and subtract multi-digit numbers to solve practical, mathematical problems using place value understanding, properties of operations, and relationships between operations.

Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Using part-whole strategies, solve problems involving addition and subtraction through the hundred-thousands place, as well as multiplication and division of multi-digit whole numbers presented in real-life, mathematical situations.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students combine and separate whole-number quantities with several digits. They use place-value reasoning to regroup, choose an efficient written method, and connect addition with subtraction in word problems.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students align place values, regroup correctly, and calculate accurately without manipulatives. They choose the correct operation for a problem and use estimation or the inverse operation to check their answer.

Common Misconceptions

Students may align numbers by their left edges instead of matching place values. They may regroup incorrectly across zeros or assume subtraction can be done in either order. Some choose an operation from a keyword without considering the situation.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “A library had 8,425 books and removed 2,768. How many remain? Solve, then check your answer using addition.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use place-value disks to model 3,482 + 2,759 and 6,241 − 2,786, recording each regrouping beside the model.

  2. Ask, “Why can subtraction be checked with addition?” Students write an explanation using one solved example.

  3. Students draw digit cards to build two four-digit numbers, roll for addition or subtraction, then earn a point for an accurate result.

  4. Give pairs a $10,000 classroom budget and a supply catalog, then have them total purchases and calculate the money remaining.
