What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find sums and differences for small groups of up to five objects. They use counters, drawings, fingers, counting on, counting back, or known facts to solve simple situations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student answers mixed addition and subtraction facts within 5 accurately and without counting every object one by one. The student can model a problem, write an equation, and explain a strategy.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count the starting group again when adding, producing an answer that is one too many. They may reverse numbers in subtraction or confuse the plus and minus signs. Some think every problem must be solved by counting all objects.
How to Assess It
- Give each student five counters and ask: “Show and solve 2 + 3 and 5 − 2. Explain how you found each answer.”

Ways to Teach It
Place five counters on a mat, hide some under a cup, and have students write the matching subtraction equation.
Ask, “How could you solve 2 + 3 without counting every counter?” Then record and compare two student strategies.
Play Make Five with number cards 0 through 5, earning a point for naming a partner that totals five.
Set up a toy snack shop where students solve stories about adding or removing up to five crackers from a plate.
