Georgia 3.PAR.2.1
The Standard
Fluently add and subtract within 1000 to solve problems.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Use part-whole strategies to represent and solve real-life problems involving addition and subtraction with whole numbers up to 10,000.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use place value, regrouping, and number relationships to add and subtract three-digit numbers. They choose the correct operation in story problems and show how their strategy works.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students solve accurately and at a steady pace using a reliable place-value strategy. They explain regrouping, estimate to check reasonableness, and connect each operation to the problem context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may regroup without adjusting the next place value, or subtract the smaller digit from the larger digit regardless of position. They may also line up numbers incorrectly or choose the wrong operation from a story problem.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A school collected 356 cans Monday and 278 Tuesday. How many cans were collected, and how many more reach 800?” Ask students to show their strategy.

Ways to Teach It
Use base-ten blocks to model 468 + 257 and 703 - 286, then record each regrouping with equations.
Ask students to compare two worked solutions and write which strategy is clearer, faster, and less likely to cause errors.
Play Target 1,000 by drawing number cards, creating three-digit numbers, and adding or subtracting to land closest to 1,000.
Use a classroom supply budget of $1,000, then have students total purchases and find the money remaining.
