- Students find sums and differences within 10 quickly and accurately. They use methods such as counting on, making 10, doubles, and related facts.

- Students solve facts within 10 accurately without counting every object. They can explain a useful strategy and connect an addition fact to a related subtraction fact.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count every object instead of using a known fact or making 10. They may switch addition and subtraction signs or assume subtraction works in either order.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: 7 + 2, 4 + 6, 8 − 3, 10 − 6, 5 + 0, and 9 − 9. Students solve, then circle one problem and show their strategy with a drawing or labels.
