What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students add and subtract two-digit numbers accurately and efficiently. They use place value, operation properties, or inverse operations to explain and check their work.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose an efficient strategy and solve accurately without counting every amount by ones. They explain how tens and ones were combined, broken apart, or regrouped, and can check with the inverse operation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add or subtract each digit separately and ignore regrouping. They may count by ones instead of using tens, or confuse which inverse operation checks their answer.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Solve 47 + 38 and 82 − 46, show a place value strategy for each, then check one answer using the inverse operation.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use base-ten blocks to model 46 + 37 and 83 − 46, trading ten ones for a ten or reversing the trade.

  2. Ask students to compare compensation and regrouping for 58 + 27, then write which method feels clearer and why.

  3. Play a partner card game where students draw two two-digit numbers, add or subtract them, and earn a point for an accurate explanation.

  4. Give students a $100 classroom store list and ask them to find total costs and change using whole-dollar prices.
