What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn equal-group, rate, or array situations into a multiplication equation. They find the product using a dependable place-value method, then estimate to judge whether the answer makes sense.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can solve a 3-digit by 2-digit product accurately without repeated prompting. They keep place values aligned, explain each partial product, and use an estimate or another method to catch errors.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may align the second partial product in the ones place instead of the tens place. They may drop a zero, regroup inaccurately, or multiply digits without accounting for place value. Some add because the problem says total, even when the quantities form equal groups.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A theater has 24 sections with 128 seats in each section. How many seats are there? Show your work and use an estimate to check.

Ways to Teach It
Build an area model for 243 × 16 using labeled place-value cards, then calculate and combine the four partial products.
Ask students to explain why 236 × 14 has two partial-product rows and what value each row represents.
Play Product Match: students pair problem cards, partial-product cards, and product cards, then explain any mismatch before claiming a set.
Plan event seating with 24 equal sections of 128 chairs, calculate total capacity, and decide whether 3,000 guests can be seated.
