Georgia 4.NR.2.4

Math4th GradeNumerical Reasoning

The Standard

Solve authentic division problems involving up to 4-digit dividends and 1- digit divisors (including whole number quotients with remainders) using strategies based on place-value understanding, properties of operations, and the relationships between operations.

Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Using part-whole strategies, solve problems involving addition and subtraction through the hundred-thousands place, as well as multiplication and division of multi-digit whole numbers presented in real-life, mathematical situations.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students solve story problems by dividing numbers up to four digits by a one-digit number. They use place value, partial quotients, models, or multiplication facts and explain what any remainder means.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose an efficient strategy, record each step clearly, and find an accurate quotient and remainder. They check by multiplying the quotient by the divisor, then adding the remainder.

Common Misconceptions

Students may divide each digit separately without regrouping or lose track of place value in partial quotients. They may ignore the remainder, write it as a decimal, or interpret it incorrectly for the situation.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: A school packs 1,327 pencils equally into 6 bins. How many pencils go in each bin, what remains, and how can multiplication check your answer?

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use place-value disks to model 1,248 divided among 4 groups, regrouping thousands, hundreds, and tens as needed.

  2. Ask students to compare partial quotients and an area model for 2,436 divided by 6, then explain which feels clearer.

  3. Play Division Match by pairing problem cards with quotient, remainder, and multiplication-check cards.

  4. Plan buses for 1,175 students when each bus holds 8, then decide how many buses are actually needed.
