What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students solve story problems by deciding whether quantities are being combined, grouped, or shared. They show the whole and its equal parts with objects, drawings, and equations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose multiplication or division from the situation and find an accurate answer within 100. They use counters, arrays, equal groups, or bar models and explain how the model matches the equation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may multiply when the problem asks them to share or group. They may confuse the number of groups with the size of each group, or draw a model that does not match their equation.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “A coach places 32 cones into 4 equal rows. How many cones are in each row?” Students draw a model, write an equation, and label the whole and parts.

Give pairs 24 counters and 6 cups, then have them model equal sharing and write the matching division equation.
Ask students to explain how 5 groups of 7 connects to 35 divided by 5 using words, pictures, and equations.
Play Model Match with cards showing word problems, arrays, bar models, and equations that students sort into matching sets.
Plan snack bags for 28 students, choosing equal group sizes and calculating how many bags or items each group needs.
