Georgia 4.NR.2.5
The Standard
Solve multi-step problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division involving whole numbers. Use mental computation and estimation strategies to justify the reasonableness of solutions.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Using part-whole strategies, solve problems involving addition and subtraction through the hundred-thousands place, as well as multiplication and division of multi-digit whole numbers presented in real-life, mathematical situations.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide which operations fit a problem and in what order to use them. They solve each step, then use mental math or estimation to check whether the final answer makes sense.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write an equation or show steps that match the situation, then calculate accurately. They use rounding, compatible numbers, or mental math to check the result and explain the comparison.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use numbers in the order given instead of deciding what each part of the problem means. They may skip a step, choose the wrong operation, or treat an estimate as the exact answer. Some students say an answer is reasonable without comparing it to an estimate.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “A school buys 6 boxes of 24 pencils and gives away 57 pencils. How many remain? Solve, estimate, and explain whether your answer is reasonable.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs play money and price cards to model buying several identical items, paying, and finding the money left.
Ask students to write which operation comes first in a two-step problem and defend their choice to a partner.
Play Estimate, Solve, Check with task cards, awarding one point for accuracy and one point for a clear reasonableness explanation.
Have students plan supplies for a class party using package sizes, quantities needed, total cost, and a fixed budget.
