Georgia 7.NR.1.11
The Standard
Solve multi-step, contextual problems involving rational numbers, converting between forms as appropriate, and assessing the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Solve relevant, mathematical problems, including multi-step problems, involving the four operations with rational numbers and quantities in any form (integers, percentages, fractions, and decimal numbers).

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students solve situations that require several operations with positive and negative fractions, decimals, and percents. They convert between forms when useful, then estimate mentally to check whether the result makes sense.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students organize the steps, choose the correct operations, and label the answer with the right unit. They convert forms accurately and use an estimate to catch sign, decimal, or calculation errors.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose operations from keywords instead of tracking what happens in the situation. They may combine fractions, decimals, and percents without converting, round too early, or ignore negative signs.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: An account starts at -$12.50, receives $30, then spends 3/5 of the new balance. Estimate, find the exact balance, and explain why it is reasonable.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs play money, store receipts, discount cards, and tax rates to calculate final costs and check each result with an estimate.
Ask students to explain when converting 35 percent to 0.35 or 7/20 makes a problem easier to solve.
Run an error-analysis relay where teams correct multistep rational number solutions and name the mistake on each card.
Have students compare two phone plans with monthly fees, discounts, and overage charges, then justify which plan costs less.
