What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students model and solve addition and subtraction situations with numbers up to 20. They use strategies such as counting on, making ten, using doubles, and connecting related facts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student selects an efficient strategy, gets an accurate answer, and shows the steps with objects, drawings, equations, or words. The student can use a known addition fact to solve a related subtraction fact.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count every object instead of counting on from the larger number. They may reverse numbers in subtraction, confuse addition and subtraction signs, or miss that related facts use the same three numbers.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Solve 8 + 7 and 15 - 8. Show a different strategy for each problem and explain your steps with pictures or words.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs counters and ten frames to solve 9 + 6, then compare counting on, making ten, and using doubles.
Ask students to explain which strategy works best for 13 - 5 and defend their choice with a drawing or equation.
Play Fact Family Match with cards showing three numbers, and have students build two addition and two subtraction equations.
Set up a class store where students spend up to 20 play dollars and calculate how much money remains.
