What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students act out stories about objects joining a group or leaving a group. They show each story with objects, drawings, fingers, ten frames, or equations and explain their model.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose addition or subtraction to match a situation within 10. They model it in two ways, find the answer, and explain what each number and symbol represents.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse joining with taking away or choose an operation from one word without following the story. They may reverse subtraction numbers, miscount objects, or think the equal sign means “the answer comes next.”

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “There are 6 apples. Two are eaten. How many remain?” Students use counters, draw the action, and write an equation.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs counters and story mats to act out joining and separating stories, then draw what happened and write an equation.

  2. Show a ten frame and an equation, then ask, “How could both represent the same story?”

  3. Students roll a number cube, draw a story card, and model the situation with counters before recording the matching equation.

  4. Count classroom pencils, crayons, or snacks, then pose stories about adding more or giving some away.
