What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students figure out who a text is meant for and what the writer wants that group to know, feel, or do. They use specific words as clues.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify who a text is meant for and whether it aims to inform, entertain, invite, or direct. They point to a word or phrase that supports their answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name the topic instead of what the writer wants readers to think or do. They may guess the audience from pictures while ignoring words such as “families,” “students,” or “please.”
How to Assess It
- Read, “Kindergarten families, please come to our class picnic Friday.” Ask: Who should hear this, what should they do, and which words helped you know?

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs an invitation, warning sign, joke, and class note to sort by audience and purpose, then circle helpful words.
Read two playground signs and ask, “Who is each sign for, and which words tell you what the writer wants?”
Play Purpose Match by pairing short text cards with picture cards labeled inform, entertain, invite, or direct.
Study a cafeteria menu and a lunchroom rule sign, then compare who reads each one and what its words help readers do.
