What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide why a text was made and who it is meant for. They use words, pictures, and text features to explain their choices.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly name why a familiar text was made and who would most likely read or hear it. They point to clues such as facts, story events, opinion words, pictures, or direct requests.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name the topic instead of explaining why the text was made. They may think the audience is the author, a character, or everyone. Some rely only on pictures and ignore words that signal the purpose.
How to Assess It
- Read, “Please adopt Spot. He is gentle and loves children.” Ask students who should hear this, why it was written, and which words helped them decide.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a storybook, animal fact page, and toy poster; have them sort each by why it was made and its intended reader.
Read a class invitation aloud, then ask, “Who should read this, and what clues helped you decide?”
Play Purpose Corners: students move to story, inform, or opinion signs after hearing a short text and explain one clue.
Compare a cereal box, bus notice, and birthday card, then name who each message is for and what it tries to do.
