What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify whom a text is meant for and explain how clues reveal that audience. They also find more than one purpose, such as informing, entertaining, explaining, or persuading, within the same text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly identify the intended audience using details such as word choice, background information, and examples. They explain two or more purposes and point to specific parts of the text that support each purpose.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a topic instead of a purpose, such as saying “dogs” rather than “to persuade readers to adopt.” They may assume a text has only one purpose or identify an audience without citing clues.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short article that includes facts and a call to action. Ask: “Who is the audience, and what are two purposes? Cite one clue for each answer.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a printed brochure to cut into sections, then label each section’s audience clue and purpose.
Ask students to explain how a school announcement can inform students while also persuading them to act.
Play Purpose Match by pairing text excerpts with audience and purpose cards, then requiring evidence for each match.
Compare a product label, advertisement, and review to identify whom each targets and what each tries to accomplish.
