What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify several reasons an author created one text and trace how each reason develops. They explain how particular choices appeal to different intended readers.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can mark where purposes appear, overlap, or shift within a text. They can connect specific language, details, tone, and structure to the audience each purpose targets.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name only one purpose or confuse the topic with the author’s purpose. They may call the audience “everyone” or make claims without pointing to words, details, or structural choices.

How to Assess It

Give students a short recycling editorial that includes facts and a call to action. Ask them to identify two purposes, name each audience, and cite one supporting detail for each.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a cut-up editorial to sort into sections that inform, persuade, or entertain, then label the likely audience for each section.

  2. Ask students to write: How does the author change language or evidence when addressing different readers within the same text?

  3. Play Purpose and Audience Match by having teams pair text excerpts with purpose cards, audience cards, and one sentence of evidence.

  4. Examine a principal’s newsletter for sections that celebrate students, inform families, and persuade volunteers, then identify the audience clues.
