What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify who an author is trying to reach and what the author wants those readers to know, feel, or do. They explain how specific words and details fit that audience and purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly name the intended audience and explain what the author wants that audience to think, feel, know, or do. They point to specific words, details, or sentence choices as evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name the topic instead of the author’s purpose. They may choose an audience based only on who could read the text, not on clues in the language.

How to Assess It

Give students this message: “Second graders, bring your library book tomorrow so our class can return books on time.” Ask them to name the audience, purpose, and two words that support their answers.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs three sample texts and audience cards, then have them match each text to its likely readers and underline supporting words.

  2. Read a school announcement and ask, “Who needs this message, what should they do, and which words tell you?”

  3. Play Audience Switch by rewriting one sentence for a principal, a classmate, or a kindergartner, then comparing word choices.

  4. Examine a cereal box, toy label, or library sign and identify its audience, purpose, and the language used to reach readers.
