What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a topic they know or care about. They combine at least two modes, such as writing, pictures, speech, audio, or movement. Their choices should fit a clear purpose and audience.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student creates a clear product about a chosen topic using at least two connected modes. Each mode adds useful information for the intended audience. The student can explain the purpose of each choice.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think adding decoration counts as another mode, even when it adds no meaning. They may choose words, pictures, or audio that do not connect. They may also forget to plan for a clear purpose and audience.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to make a mini poster about a chosen topic with a title, two sentences, and a labeled drawing. Have them name the audience and purpose.

Ways to Teach It
Have students fold a mini-book and combine captions with cut-paper illustrations to teach classmates how to do something.
Compare a text-only page with an illustrated page, then ask students to explain what the picture helps the reader understand.
Play Mode Match by pairing message cards with picture, sound, or movement cards that would communicate each message clearly.
Create a library recommendation poster for younger students using a short review, a book drawing, and a recorded sentence.
