What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students create a text or presentation that combines modes such as words, images, audio, video, or data. They address a specific audience, meet at least two purposes, judge their choices, and revise.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student names a specific audience and two purposes before creating. The final product uses clear features such as captions, graphics, narration, or layout, then includes an honest self-evaluation and useful revision.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think adding decorative images to slides counts as using multiple modes. They may confuse topic with purpose, choose an audience that is too broad, or include features that do not serve both purposes.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Create a one-page post for teen drivers that informs and persuades using a statistic, image, headline, and caption. Label two choices and explain how each fits the audience.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a printed news brief, markers, and slide software, then have them turn it into a two-purpose post for parents.

  2. Ask students to compare two public service ads and write which visual, audio, and language choices fit each audience and purpose.

  3. Run an audience swap where teams draw an audience and two purpose cards, then revise the same message in five minutes.

  4. Have students create a school event announcement that informs students and persuades families, using a QR code, image, and concise copy.
