What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students create a text or presentation that combines words with visuals, audio, video, or design. They use it for two clear aims and shape their choices for a named audience. They also judge how well those choices work.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can create a product whose wording, images, layout, and sound fit a named audience. The product achieves two clear aims. The student can judge specific choices and revise weak ones.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add images or sound that do not support the message. They may address a broad audience instead of making choices for a specific group. Self-evaluations often state personal likes rather than judging how well each feature works.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Create one slide that explains a school club to ninth graders and persuades them to join. Label two design choices, then rate each choice’s effectiveness.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build a one-page event flyer using a headline, photo, caption, color, and layout to inform students and encourage attendance.

  2. Write a paragraph explaining how the same message should change for parents, classmates, and school administrators.

  3. Play Audience Switch by drawing an audience card and revising a sample slide’s wording, image, and layout in five minutes.

  4. Create a public service post that teaches neighbors about water conservation and persuades them to change one daily habit.
