What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students figure out who a text is meant for and why the author made it. They use words, pictures, and tone as clues to explain their thinking.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a short book, sign, note, or ad, students can name the likely audience and tell why it was written. They point to a word or phrase that supports each answer.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the audience is anyone who happens to read the text. They may name a topic instead of a purpose, or ignore clues such as commands, greetings, and word choice.

How to Assess It

Give students this note: “First graders, please whisper so everyone can read.” Ask them to name the audience and purpose, then underline one word clue.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a cereal box, picture book, class rule poster, and invitation to sort by audience and purpose using labeled mats.

  2. Read two playground signs, then ask, “Which sign is for young children, and which words helped you decide?”

  3. Play Audience Detective: teams draw a text card, name its audience and purpose, then earn a point by citing one word clue.

  4. Walk around school, photograph signs, and make a class chart naming each sign’s audience, purpose, and strongest word clue.
