What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students determine whom a text addresses and what the writer wants that audience to think, feel, know, or do. They explain how specific writing choices serve those goals.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can identify a specific audience and purpose, then support both with text evidence. The student can explain how tone, details, structure, and word choice affect that audience.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse the topic with the writer’s purpose. They may name a general audience, such as “everyone,” without using evidence from tone, details, or word choice.

How to Assess It

Give students a school event announcement written for families. Ask them to identify the audience and purpose, then cite two choices shaped by both.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort printed ads, speeches, articles, and posts by likely audience and purpose, then label the clues used for each choice.

  2. Write about how a principal’s message on phone use would change when addressed to students, families, or teachers.

  3. Play Audience Switch, where teams rewrite one sentence for a new audience and classmates guess who should receive it.

  4. Compare a company’s product page with its social media ad, noting how each version targets different readers and goals.
