What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students determine why a text was created and who it is meant to reach. They analyze how the writer’s tone, details, language, and format fit that goal and audience.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately identify the intended audience and the writer’s purpose. They explain how specific choices in tone, details, language, and format serve that audience and purpose.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat purpose as the topic instead of the writer’s goal. They may name a broad audience, such as “everyone,” without using evidence from the text.
How to Assess It
- Give students a public service announcement and ask: Who is the audience, what is the purpose, and which two choices reveal both?

Ways to Teach It
Place an advertisement, news article, and instruction sheet at stations, then have students label clues about each text’s purpose and audience.
Ask students to explain how a school announcement would change if written for first graders, parents, or the school board.
Play Audience Switch, where students rewrite one sentence for an audience card and classmates guess the intended readers.
Compare two product websites aimed at different age groups, then list how images, word choice, and claims change for each audience.
