What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify who a text targets and what its creator wants to accomplish. They explain how language, details, evidence, tone, images, and format support those choices.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can infer the audience and purpose of an article, speech, advertisement, or infographic. They cite specific choices and explain how each choice shapes the audience’s response.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often confuse the topic with the creator’s purpose or label the audience as “everyone.” They may name tone, images, or word choice without explaining how those choices affect a specific audience.
How to Assess It
- Give students a public service poster and ask: “Who is the audience, what should they think or do, and which two choices reveal this?”

Ways to Teach It
Have groups sort printed advertisements, editorials, flyers, and infographics by audience and purpose, then highlight the clues used for each choice.
Compare two texts about the same issue and discuss why each creator chose different words, evidence, images, or formats.
Play Audience Swap by giving students one message and audience cards, then having them rewrite the message for each selected audience.
Analyze a school announcement or local advertisement and identify what its creator wants a specific group to think, feel, or do.
