What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students figure out who a text is meant to reach and what the writer wants that group to think, feel, or do. They trace how those goals shape language, evidence, tone, structure, and visuals.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can infer the intended readers and the response the writer wants from them. They can explain how specific choices in tone, evidence, word choice, structure, or visuals fit those readers and goals.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the intended reader as anyone who encounters the text. They may name a goal, such as inform or persuade, without connecting it to specific language, details, tone, or structure.
How to Assess It
- Give students a campaign speech and ask: Who is the intended reader or listener, what response does the speaker want, and which two choices support your answer?

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs print ads, speeches, and editorials to annotate, then sort by intended readers and desired responses.
Ask students to rewrite a school announcement for parents and classmates, then explain three changes they made for each group.
Play Audience Switch by drawing random readers and goals, then revising one paragraph to fit the new combination.
Compare a company’s product page with its investor report, noting how word choice, evidence, and visuals change for each group.
