What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the specific job a text is meant to do, such as report findings, reflect on experience, or direct a procedure. They use that purpose to predict organization, interpret word choice, and decide which details matter most.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a lab report, memoir excerpt, or user guide, students can name its purpose and cite clues from structure, tone, and vocabulary. They adjust their reading approach, then write a summary that reflects the text’s intended job.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often name the topic instead of the purpose, or label every nonfiction text as simply informative. They may rely on format alone and miss that one text can explain, reflect, and instruct at the same time.
How to Assess It
- For an exit ticket, give students a short troubleshooting guide. Ask them to state its specific purpose, cite two clues, and explain one helpful reading move.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs sort printed excerpts from a lab report, memoir, and repair manual, then highlight structural clues that reveal each purpose.
Ask students to compare how they would read a memoir passage and assembly instructions on the same topic, citing two differences.
Play Purpose Detective: reveal an excerpt one line at a time, and award points for purpose claims supported by visible clues.
Bring in a college syllabus, scholarship essay, and workplace procedure, then have students identify what each document expects readers to do.
