What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students determine what a writer is trying to accomplish and how the setting shapes the writing. They use that purpose to interpret structure, word choice, evidence, and key details.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain whether a text aims to document, reflect, instruct, analyze, or argue. They point to structure, wording, and evidence that reveal its purpose and adjust their reading accordingly.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse a text’s topic with its purpose or assume every text only informs or persuades. They may also think technical means difficult, or that personal writing cannot provide useful evidence.

How to Assess It

Give students a short lab report excerpt. Ask, “What job is this text meant to do, and how should that purpose guide your reading?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have pairs sort printed excerpts from a lab report, memoir, user manual, and editorial by purpose, then underline clues.

  2. Ask, “How should your reading change when a writer aims to instruct, reflect, explain, or argue?” Students support answers with text evidence.

  3. Play Purpose Detective: teams identify each excerpt’s job, audience, and two clues, earning one point for each supported answer.

  4. Compare a medicine label with a patient’s online review, then list what each helps readers understand and what it cannot establish.
