What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students determine what a writer is trying to accomplish in a disciplinary, personal, or technical text. They use that purpose to interpret structure, details, evidence, and vocabulary.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can name a text’s specific purpose and cite features that reveal it. They adjust their reading by tracking evidence, reflection, or procedures based on what the writer aims to accomplish.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse purpose with topic or audience. They may also assume every text aims only to inform, ignoring personal reflection, disciplinary argument, or technical instruction.

How to Assess It

Give students a lab report, personal essay, or user guide excerpt. Ask: "What is the writer trying to accomplish, and how does that purpose guide your reading?"

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have groups sort excerpt cards into disciplinary, personal, and technical purposes, then label the clues that guided each choice.

  2. Ask students to compare a memoir excerpt and research abstract: How does each writer’s purpose change what readers should notice?

  3. Play Purpose Detective by revealing one text feature at a time while teams identify the likely purpose and explain their reasoning.

  4. Compare a medication label, college essay, and news analysis, then list what readers need from each text and why.
