What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students determine who a text is meant to reach and what the writer wants that audience to think, feel, know, or do. They explain how specific choices shape the text’s effect.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately identify the intended audience and the writer’s main purpose. They cite specific choices in language, evidence, tone, and format, then explain how those choices affect readers.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name an audience as “everyone” without using evidence from the text. They may identify a purpose but fail to explain how tone, details, structure, or word choice serves it.

How to Assess It

Give students a public service announcement and ask: Who is the intended audience, what is the purpose, and which two choices support your answer?

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups printed ads, speeches, editorials, and instructions to sort by audience and purpose, then label the clues they used.

  2. Ask students to explain how a school announcement would change if written for parents, students, or local news readers.

  3. Play Audience Switch: students revise one sentence for a new audience while classmates identify the audience from word choice and tone.

  4. Compare two product reviews from different websites and identify how each platform’s readers shape the details, tone, and rating language.
