K.L.GC.2 is a Georgia English Language Arts standard. These are the expectations under it.

Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students decide whether a group of words communicates a whole idea. They say and write sentences that name someone or something and tell what happens or what it is like.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can tell which word groups make sense on their own. They can say, build, or write a sentence that names who or what and tells something about it.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think any group of words is a sentence if it begins with a capital or ends with a period. They may leave out who is acting, as in “Runs fast,” or what happens, as in “The brown dog.” They may also join several ideas with repeated uses of “and.”
How to Assess It: Show students “The cat sleeps” and “The cat.” Ask them to circle the sentence, then add words to fix the other group.

Lesson moves

Give pairs word cards such as “The rabbit,” “hops,” and “fast,” then have them build and read sentences aloud.
Show an action picture and ask, “Who is in the picture, and what is happening?” Students answer with one clear sentence.
Play Sentence or Not by reading word groups aloud while students hold up green or red cards and explain their choices.
Have each student write or dictate a morning message sentence telling one thing the class will do that day.
