What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide whether a group of words gives the reader a full idea. They arrange and write words to name who or what and tell something about it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify a sentence among incomplete word groups. The student can say and write a clear sentence that names who or what and tells something about it.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think any word group with a capital letter and period is complete. They may leave out who or what, omit the action, or join ideas with repeated use of “and.”
How to Assess It
- Give students three word groups: “The red bird sings.” “Under the tall tree.” “My sister.” Ask them to circle the sentence and revise one other group.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word cards for a naming part and a telling part, then have them build, read, and record three sentences.
Display a playground picture and ask, “What is happening?” Students write one sentence, then explain how it gives the reader a full idea.
Play Sentence or Not by reading word groups while students hold up a green card for complete or a red card for incomplete.
Students write a sentence describing one classroom rule, then post it beside a matching photo or drawing.
