What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose a verb form that fits whether a sentence names one person, animal, place, or thing, or more than one. They use those matching forms when speaking and writing complete sentences.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly write “The dog runs” and “The dogs run.” They can explain that the verb changes when the sentence names one or more than one.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add an s to both words, writing “The dogs runs.” They may also use is with plural subjects or are with singular subjects.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Circle the correct verb in “The bird sing/sings” and “The birds sing/sings,” then write one matching sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs noun and verb cards, then have them build and read sentences about one animal and several animals.

  2. Show “The cat jump” and ask students to explain what sounds wrong, correct it, and write a matching plural sentence.

  3. Play Subject-Verb Match by having students pair subject cards such as “one frog” and “three frogs” with the correct verb cards.

  4. Observe classroom jobs, then write sentences such as “The helper passes papers” and “The helpers pass papers.”
