What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify the subject and choose a verb form that matches it. They write complete sentences in which singular and plural subjects agree with their verbs.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students consistently match singular subjects with singular verbs and plural subjects with plural verbs. They can correct an agreement error and explain the change using the subject.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a verb that does not match a singular or plural subject, such as “The dogs runs.” They may also mistake a nearby noun for the subject or use “is” and “are” interchangeably.

How to Assess It

Give students this exit ticket: “Choose the correct verb and explain why: The basket of apples (is, are) on the table.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs subject cards and verb cards, then have them build and read aloud five sentences with correct agreement.

  2. Ask students to compare “The bird sings” and “The birds sing,” then write what changes and why.

  3. Play Agreement Sort by placing sentence cards under “correct” or “fix it,” then correcting every misplaced verb.

  4. Use a classroom picture and have students write sentences about one object and several objects, such as “The clock ticks” and “The pencils roll.”
