What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students match singular subjects with singular verbs and plural subjects with plural verbs. They keep the match accurate in simple, compound, and expanded sentences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student finds the full subject and selects the matching verb form. They maintain agreement when subjects are compound or separated from verbs by descriptive phrases.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may match the verb to the closest noun instead of the full subject. They may add an s to a verb with a plural subject. They may treat two subjects joined by and as singular.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Correct both sentences and underline each subject: The basket of apples sit on the table. Maya and Luis walks home.

Ways to Teach It
Build sentences with subject and verb cards, then insert prepositional phrase cards without changing the verb agreement.
Discuss why the verb changes in The dog runs and The dogs run, then write a rule with another example.
Play Agreement Relay, where teams choose the correct verb card for each sentence and explain their choice.
Edit subject-verb agreement errors in a mock morning announcement before reading the corrected version aloud.
