What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students match singular subjects with singular verb forms and plural subjects with plural verb forms. They keep the match correct even when extra words separate the subject and verb.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose matching subjects and verbs in simple, compound, and expanded sentences. They can identify and fix agreement errors without changing the sentence’s meaning.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose the verb that matches the nearest noun instead of the subject. They may add an unnecessary s to a verb with a plural subject. Forms such as is, are, has, have, does, and do often cause confusion.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: Circle the correct verb in “The basket of apples (sit, sits) on the table” and “Maya and Leo (walk, walks) home.” Then write one sentence with a plural subject and underline its verb.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs subject and verb cards, then have students build matching sentences and explain each match.

  2. Ask students to compare “The dogs barks” and “The dogs bark,” then write why one sentence sounds correct.

  3. Play Agreement Relay by posting sentences around the room for teams to correct on recording sheets.

  4. Have students edit a short morning announcement script so every subject matches its verb.
