What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students name one person, animal, or thing and choose a verb that matches it. They repeat the task for more than one, then say or write a complete sentence with adult help.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given pictures of one dog and two dogs, a student says, “The dog runs” and “The dogs run.” The student also uses matching pairs such as is/are and has/have in simple sentences.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add s to both words and say, “The dogs runs.” They may also mix up common pairs such as is/are and has/have.

How to Assess It

Show pictures of one bird and three birds. Ask students to complete “The bird ___” and “The birds ___” using fly.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students picture cards showing one cat and several cats, then have them build matching sentences with word cards.

  2. Ask, “What changes when one rabbit hops becomes two rabbits hop?” and record students’ explanations beside both sentences.

  3. Play Verb Match: hold up a subject card, and students choose between two verb cards to complete the sentence.

  4. During cleanup, students describe classmates’ actions using frames such as “Mia carries” and “Mia and Leo carry.”
