What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide whether a group of words gives a full idea. They build and write sentences that clearly name who or what and tell something about it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify which word groups make sense on their own. The student can write a clear sentence with a subject, an action or description, correct word order, and ending punctuation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat any group of words with a capital letter and period as a sentence. They may omit who or what the sentence is about, leave out the action, or join unrelated ideas.
How to Assess It
- Give students three word groups: “The puppy barked,” “Under the big table,” and “My sister.” Ask them to circle the sentence and fix one incomplete group.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs subject, action, and detail cards to arrange into sentences, then have them read each sentence aloud.
Ask students to finish the prompt, “After school, I,” then explain how their ending makes the idea clear.
Play Sentence or Not by reading word groups aloud while students hold up sentence and not sentence cards.
Have students write clear directions for one classroom routine, such as sharpening a pencil or turning in homework.
