What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine how words, phrases, and clauses work together in sentences. They use that knowledge to understand complex sentences and write complete sentences with varied patterns.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify subjects, predicates, phrases, and clauses when reading. They write complete sentences and vary sentence openings, lengths, and structures without creating fragments or run-ons.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write fragments that lack a subject or complete predicate. They may also join complete thoughts with only a comma or repeat the same sentence pattern throughout a paragraph.
How to Assess It
- Give students three simple sentences: “Maya opened the book. She found a map. She called her friend.” Ask them to combine and revise the sentences in two different ways.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs color-coded word cards and have them build, expand, and rearrange complete sentences while keeping the meaning clear.
Ask students to compare two versions of a paragraph and explain which sentence patterns make one version easier to read.
Play Sentence Fix-It: teams correct fragments, run-ons, and repetitive sentences posted around the room, then justify each revision.
Use a school announcement or lunch menu description and revise its sentences to make the information clearer and more engaging.
