What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify how words, phrases, and clauses work together in a sentence. They combine, expand, and rearrange ideas to write clear sentences with varied structures.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write complete sentences with varied lengths, openings, and structures. They combine related ideas clearly and use punctuation to show how sentence parts connect.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think longer sentences are always better or that every sentence should follow the same pattern. They may create run-ons when combining ideas or fragments when trying varied openings.
How to Assess It
- Give students three short sentences: “Maya heard thunder. She closed the windows. Rain began.” Ask them to combine the ideas into one clear sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips with subjects, verbs, phrases, and clauses, then have them build three complete sentences using different structures.
Ask students to revise a repetitive paragraph, then explain which sentence change made the ideas easier to follow.
Play Sentence Switch, where students draw an opening card and rewrite a sentence using that word, phrase, or clause.
Examine sentences from a menu, advertisement, or school notice, then revise two sentences to improve clarity and variety.
