Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students use sentence parts and their connections to make sense of grade-level reading. They track how clauses, phrases, punctuation, and linking words shape meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students break long sentences into meaningful parts and identify the main idea. They use punctuation, conjunctions, pronouns, and clause order to explain how details relate.
Common Misconceptions: Students may read each phrase as a separate idea and miss how clauses connect. They may also rely only on commas, overlooking conjunctions, pronouns, or word order that show meaning.
How to Assess It: Give students one complex sentence from the class text. Ask them to mark the main idea, bracket supporting details, and explain how the sentence parts connect.

Lesson moves

Cut a complex sentence into clause strips, then have pairs arrange the strips and explain how each clause affects the meaning.
Ask students to rewrite a long sentence in their own words, then discuss which words showed cause, contrast, time, or condition.
Play Sentence Detective with short passages, awarding points for correctly marking main clauses, supporting clauses, conjunctions, and referents.
