What Students Need to Do: Students use sentence structure to make sense of grade-level reading. They track how clauses, phrases, conjunctions, word order, and punctuation show relationships among ideas.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students identify the main idea in a long or layered sentence. They explain how clauses, conjunctions, phrases, word order, and punctuation connect details and shape meaning.
Common Misconceptions: Students may read each clause as a separate idea and miss how conjunctions connect them. They may attach an opening phrase to the wrong noun or overlook punctuation that signals meaning.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Read, “Although the rain had stopped, Maya carried her umbrella because dark clouds still covered the sky.” Explain why Maya carried it.

Lesson moves

Cut a complex sentence into phrase strips, rearrange them, and discuss which arrangements preserve the original meaning.
Read a long sentence aloud, then write its main idea and explain how each added phrase changes the meaning.
Play Sentence Detective by underlining the main clause, circling conjunctions, and explaining the sentence before earning a point.
