What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine how words and phrases work together to make complete, clear sentences. They build, combine, and revise sentences so their speaking and writing do not sound repetitive.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify who or what a sentence is about and what happens. They write complete sentences, combine related ideas, and vary sentence beginnings and structures without creating fragments or run-ons.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat any group of words with a capital letter and period as a complete sentence. They may create fragments or run-ons when combining ideas, or think varied sentences only means changing sentence length.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short sentences: “The dog barked. The dog chased the squirrel.” Ask them to combine the ideas into one complete sentence, then explain their word choice.

Play Sentence Repair Relay, with teams correcting fragments and run-ons posted around the room.
Examine sentences from a school lunch menu or event flyer, then revise two sentences to make the information clearer.
